The jubilee 2025 and Pope Francis Death.

The Holy Year, which is celebrated every 25 years, although Francis had already convoked an extraordinary Jubilee in 2016 dedicated to Mercy, was inaugurated by the pontiff and, in an unprecedented evento in the recent history of the Church, will be closed by his successor.

On the same day of his death, the Vatican confirmed that the jubilee celebrations would continue without interruption, so while the Pope's body was held in the chapel of his residence in Casa Santa Marta, the faithful continued to cross the Via della Conciliazione to pass through the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica.

However, the Holy See announced the closure of the special route set up for pilgrims -a fenced path, adorned with flower pots- with the aim of unifying the line of those who wish to cross the Holy Door with that of those who seek to pay homage to the pope's coffin, exposed since Wednesday in the Vatican temple. St. Peter's was the only one of the four Roman gates that Pope Francis personally opened. He did so on December 24 to inaugurate what was his first and last ordinary Jubilee.

The other three holy doors of Rome –located in the papal basílicas of St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran and St. Paul Outside the Walls– remain open to pilgrimage, with the exception of that of St. Mary Major, which will be closed all Saturday, since the pontiff will be buried there, by his express wish, after the funeral in San Pedro.
